About Us

Welcome to the Punxsutawney Area Amateur Radio Club’s website

Because our club’s home is Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and Punxsutawney is known world-wide for our Punxsutawney Phil, we, in the radio club are also known far and wide for what we refer to as our club hosted “GroundHog Day special event station” and it is something that we  have proudly participated in for many years. (have to find out how long this has been done) (also have to find something on how old the club is)

The members of our club have maintained a proud tradition of making radio contacts with as many fellow amateur radio operators (also referred to as “hams”) from around these United States and around the world.  For the longest time we have been headquartered in a room at the Punxsutawney Airport and that is where all the activity is at least for Ground Hog Day.

We have also participated in the annual “American Radio Relay League’s” Field Day exercise, held in June, which is a two day event where the major intent is operate off the grid, using batteries, generators, or
other sources of power to run the equipment and utilizing antennas erected especially for the event, in other words, temporary antenna’s.

Our club meets once a month, on the second Tuesday, at the Chinese Buffet in Punxsutawney Plaza at 7:00 P.M.  We also have a “shack night” held at our Punxsutawney Airport radio shack, generally from May to October, on the first Tuesday of those months.  And, once a week, on Mondays, at 7:30 p.m. we conduct a 2 meter radio net on the 146.655 repeater (PL 123.0) where the club members, and non members gather to check equipment and practice radio procedure in case of an emergency.

Our club’s radio callsign is K3HWJ which was the call sign of Art Sweeney, a long time ham and member of the Punxsutawney Area Amateur Radio Club.
